The PsySSA Student Division offers you another webinar in our free Ask Us Anything series. We have partnered with PsySSA’s Health Psychology Special Interest Group to give you access to guest experts in the field of Health Psychology.
Dr. Rizwana Roomaney is a research psychologist, registered counsellor and senior lecturer in the department of psychology at Stellenbosch University. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, majoring in Psychology and Sociology. She then completed her honours degree at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and a counselling internship at the South African National Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders (NICRO), leading to a registration as a registered counsellor with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Dr Roomaney completed her MA Research Psychology at UWC and her research internship at the South African Medical Research Council as a National Research Foundation intern prior to registering as a research psychologist with the HPCSA. She then obtained her PhD in 2017 at Stellenbosch University.
Most of her research is conducted in the field of health psychology. She is interested in the psychological, behavioural and social aspects of illness, health and healthcare. While her research is mostly centred on women’s health, she is open to collaborating on a wide range of topics within the field, and not exclusively in women’s health. She is currently working with several students conducting research among patients with breast cancer, gynaecological cancers, endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome. She has a growing interest in how patient populations use online spaces in relation to their health behaviours and health cyber psychology.
Dr Roomaney has held several research grants including Thuthuka and the Black academic advancement programme. Dr Roomaney is the national delegate for South Africa at the European Health Psychology Society and is leading the development of a Health Psychology Special Interest Group in the Psychological Society of South Africa. She is also on the steering committee of the psychology special interest group of the Southern African Society of reproductive medicine and gynaecological endoscopy.
Ms Laura Hartmann is a current Research Psychology Masters student at Stellenbosch University. Her masters thesis is focused on women's health and explores self-image and self-esteem in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome through body mapping. She also works part time for the Institute
for Life Course Health Research and volunteers as a counsellor for Hope House and Lifeline Western
Cape.
