The importance of volunteering

Find out why volunteering is important while studying psychology

  • It is beneficial when applying for a master’s degree in psychology to show that you have participated in voluntary work and have a passion for working with people.
  • Volunteering puts you in a position that enables you to work with marginalised groups and share in their experiences and feelings. It deepens your understanding and insight into how individuals are affected by specific events and issues, as well as how their circumstances, beliefs and cultures play a role in their perceptions of what they are experiencing. This insight is crucial as a potential psychologist to understand the people you are working with, especially in the diverse South African context. This can enhance one’s understanding by equipping oneself with knowledge of how specific things work by gaining first-hand experience through volunteering.
  • It is an opportunity for psychology students – who are usually inclined to helping others and therefore chose this as a career path – to aid others with the problems they are facing, fulfilling their intrinsic need to help others.
